Abstract:

Moment-resisting frames have extensive usage in earthquake-prone areas and high ability in energy dissipation. After the earthquake in Northridge 1994,Kobe 1995 fixed connections of steel structures have shown poor performance and generally they were caught brittle fracture of beam flange weld to the column. In order to remedy to avoid similar situations in future earthquakes, researchers introduced connection with reduced beam section in name of RBS(Reduced Beam Section),that stress concentration at the junction can be prevented by reducing the local section of beam in the vicinity column and location of plastic hinge transferred from connection to the distance from the column.  In this research, firstable the three special steel moment-resisting frames of three-dimension 5,10 and 15 story with  seismic compressed sections as RBS was analyzed as time history by using SAP software at the near and far field earthquakes with and without considering the effect of vertical component, then a critical connections in each of the frames was modeled by ANSYS software and it was analyzed as dynamic under obtained loads from each record(in SAP). The study results showed that the vertical component put negative effects on the performance of this type of connection in terms of concentration of stress, strain and ductility. It is necessary to say that the negative effect of the vertical component on the connections at near field earthquakes was comparatively more than at far field earthquakes.

Seismic Behavior of Jacket Offshore Platform Subjected to Near and Far Field Ground Motions

Offshore structures such as jacket platforms have to inevitably be designed against  sever  environmental actions. In seismically active areas these structures also become susceptible to earthquake excitations. Strong ground motions recorded  in recent earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan, 1999 Chi-chi, Taiwan and 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquakes, revealed that the dynamic motions in nea...

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods

Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...

Evaluating the effects of near-field earthquakes on the behavior of moment resisting frames

Following the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes, most of modern structures damaged seriously or devastated totally despite the seismic codes of these countries that had been expected to bear advanced criteria for seismic design of structures. After extensive research, the most probable reason of those destructions was attributed to special specifications of near-field earthquakes. In th...

investigation on nonlinear dynamic behavior of thin steel plate shear walls with rigid beam to column connections under far and near fault earthquakes

considering recent developments in earthquake engineering, researchers has detected different effects of earthquakes far and near from the fault. investigations that have been done in this area show that near fault earthquakes have shorter time period comparing far fault earthquakes and in the velocity of near fault earthquakes, there are one or more impacting pulses with a big domain and perio...

Seismic behavior of drilled beam section in moment connections

Abstract: Reduced Beam Section (RBS) and Drilled Beam Section (DBS) are seismic moment resistant frame connections, introduced after 1994 Northridge earthquake. RBS connection has been tested under cyclic loading and showed acceptable performance. In this paper, seismic behavior of Drilled Beam Section (DBS) connection is studied numerically using finite element method. A drilled beam section ...
